Tips for Glazing a Window

To seal your windows properly so that there is no unwanted water and air, glazing ought to be replaced after a certain period. Glazing requires some time and skills but you can as well do it on your own by applying the below guidelines.

Make sure you get all you need. You have to ensure every item that will be necessary when a window is being glazed is acquired. The items that will aid in glazing your window properly are such as adhesive tape, a putty knife, clean rags, putty, sandpaper, paint, paintbrushes, and more. There are high chances that most of the items are in your garage or house but if they are not, you can buy them from nearby hardware.

Ensure you get rid of the old putty as well as glass. You should put a newspaper on both sides of the pane. Secondly, using a hammer, damage the glass and remove it from the pane. The other thing is to make the putty lose by the use of the putty knife. If the putty does not easily come out when one is using a knife; they should consider melting it using the blow torch. You should get the frames free of the metal fasteners.

Ensure you make the wood smooth. Use the sandpaper to smooth the wood. After smoothening it sufficiently, treat the wood using the oil-based primer then seal it off. It is important o apply primer because it hinders oil absorption that can result in cracks on the glazing after a short time, meaning more drafts. The primer ought to be left for 24 hours so that it dries.

Knead the putty. After the putty is kneaded till soft put it along the inside of the panes then press it using your fingers. Use the putty knife to ensure it is as tightly pressed as possible. After putting the putty, fix the new glass.

Ensure you apply new glazing. Put glazier points at the midpoint of the pane then apply pressure on the putty knife to make sure the point is in the proper position. Ensure each side of the window pane has glazier points then put another glazing on the window frame. Apply pressure to make sure the glass pane is held securely by the glazing. Ensure you remove the excess putty.

You should let the glazing dry and paint it. Ensure you leave the glazing for a period of ten days for drying purpose. You could get irritated seeing fingerprints all over the glass but never clean it until it dries up. With the use of the oil-based primer and paint, clean up the window while ensuring it matches with the other windows of your house.
